All business have highs and lows; often from factors beyond their control. Change can literally hit a business overnight so keeping a finger on the pulse of our business is vital. Sadly most of us get so caught up in the day to day we forget to take time to look over the parapet. By doing that we miss not only the threats to our business but also the opportunities.
The July session of the Big Thinking Business Forums will focus on diagnosing the Breaking points; Tipping points and Turning points of business. Not only how to recognise them but also how to deal with them.
Our keynote speaker is Paul Gianotti, General Manager Store Support at The Warehouse and Warehouse Stationery. He took over when that business was on the edge of one of those Breaking points. Our interactive session will be conducted by Glen Sharkey, Leadership and Team Development Expert.
The aim of our forums is to have business owners and managers listen to great speakers; people who have dealt first hand with a myriad of business challenges. We then facilitate an interactive activity so attendees discuss the ideas they’ve just heard; create an Action Plan of what they will do differently and implement just one or two when they get back to their business.

Paul is a career retailer and over the past 25 years he has worked across a number of retail sectors in senior leadership roles. Like many others he “fell” in to retail and started a retail sports business on the shop floor, which, over a ten year period grew in to two nationwide chains with more than 50 stores. He then spent nine years in the pharmacy sector, where he again took two start up operations and grew them to be highly successful pharmacy chains.
For the past nine years he has held senior roles with The Warehouse Group. Paul was part of a leadership team that turned an underperforming Warehouse Stationery in to the darling of The Warehouse Group, with eight consecutive years of profit growth, the last four being double digit.
In the workplace, Paul is passionate about people – his support office team and his store teams – and his story will show why people are any organisation’s greatest asset and when a business is broken, how easy it is to disengage a team but how easy it is to engage them again.
Paul’s topic is: “Broken to Brilliant – Taking Your People on the Journey”
Where he will share his insights on how your people have to be part of any change when your business is at a tipping point.
Leadership and Team Development Expert
Glen Sharkey, has almost 30 years’ experience in training and developing people. He’s the current president of The National Speakers Association of New Zealand and is the author of several books, including “Fairly Common Tales” for emerging workplace leaders. His latest work, “The Art of Persuasive Influence” has a particular focus on equipping people to be more effective in ‘courageous conversations’.
He spends most of his time these days focussing on leadership development and is repeatedly asked back to train leaders and management for some of NZ’s largest companies including Downer, KiwiRail, and Carter Holt Harvey, helping people to relate better with each other to increase productivity and effectiveness.
As an award-winning educator, Glen Sharkey thrives on the challenge of transforming team culture by equipping and empowering individuals to behave and think more responsibly and proactively!
